The history of hypnosis is as ancient as that of magic and medicine , indeed hypnosis has been used as a method in all three. It's scientific history began in the latter part of the 18th century with Franz mesmer, a German physician who used hypnosis in the treatment of patients in Vienna and Paris . The word mesmerism derived from his name. He developed the theory of 'animal magnetism '- the disease are the result of blockages in the flow of magnetic forces in body.He believed that he could store his animal magnetism in baths of iron fillings and transfer it to patients with iron rod.It is still practiced in some countries but not approved by medical science.

He took further the theory of franz mesmer and in the middle of 19th century , he studied this phenomenon and coined the term hypnosis and hypnotism after the greek god, HYPNOS Hypnos is the greek god for sleep.
